So, get ready to meet the not-so-gay but we love 'em celebrities like the sexy Dev Patel, the trailblazing trans icon Hunter Schafer, and the fierce and fabulous Laverne Cox. But wait, there's more! We're also shining our spotlight on the glorious realm of bisexuals in Hollywood – trust us, the list is longer than a CVS receipt.

In "Celebrities We Love: Gay or Not," we're broadening our faux celebrity worship to include personalities of all stripes. We're talking about straight guys, trans luminaries, and those who sprinkle a little bisexuality into the mix. Get ready for  more sass than a catfight in a glitter factory.

Dev Patel not so gay

Dev Patel

2006: Enter Dev, stage right, in "Skins." He's a newbie with zilch acting chops, playing Anwar Kharral. He nails it, though, and the show scoops up awards like they're going out of style, including the Rose d'Or and the Philips Audience Award at the BAFTA TV Awards.

2008: Boom! "Slumdog Millionaire" hits, and Patel's life goes from zero to a hundred real quick. He's Jamal Malik, a Mumbai kid who's got more grit than a sandpaper factory. Awards? He's swimming in them – British Independent Film Award, National Board of Review Award, Chicago Film Critics Association Award, and not one but two Black Reel Awards. Oscar nom? Nah, Heath Ledger snagged that, but Patel did share a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast.

2010: Oops! "The Last Airbender" happens. It's like scoring an own goal – commercial hit but critically, it's a facepalm moment. Casting controversy, shoddy effects – Patel shines, but it's like being the shiniest coin in a pile of... not coins.

2016: Redemption arc activated! "Lion" roars onto the scene. It's a tearjerker and Patel's acting is on fire. He bags his first BAFTA and gets nods from the Academy, Golden Globes, and SAG. "Lion" is not just a film; it's a whole mood.

2021: "The Green Knight" rolls out, and Patel's serving medieval realness as Gawain. He's also cooking up "Monkey Man," his directorial debut. It's Patel's world; we're just living in it.

Through highs and lows, Patel's journey is like a rollercoaster designed by a madman – thrilling, unexpected, and absolutely unmissable.

Strap in for the meteoric rise of Hunter Schafer, the multi-talented, barrier-breaking star who's taking Hollywood by storm. It all kicked off in 2019 when Schafer snagged her first acting gig in HBO's "Euphoria," stepping into the shoes of Jules Vaughn, a transgender high school student navigating the rocky seas of adolescence. This role wasn't just a debut; it was a cultural moment, earning Schafer nominations from the Shorty Awards, MTV Movie & TV Awards, and a Dorian Award.

But Schafer's not just a one-hit wonder. She's a fashion force, having strutted for big names like Dior, Miu Miu, and Marc Jacobs, proving she can own the runway as well as the screen. And, oh boy, did she cause a stir with her 2022 Instagram activity, sparking a heated debate in the LGBTQ+ community about trans identities.

2023 was a big year for Schafer, as she took on the role of Tigris Snow in "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes." Director Francis Lawrence praised her authentic audition, which landed her the role. Up next, she's diving into more projects like "Cuckoo," alongside John Malkovich and Gemma Chan, showing there's no slowing down for this rising star.

Schafer's journey isn't just about acting, though. She's a proud advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, famously taking on North Carolina's bathroom bill. She's also a co-executive producer and co-writer for a special episode of "Euphoria," showcasing her behind-the-scenes chops.

In a nutshell, Schafer's a Renaissance woman of the 21st century: actor, model, activist, artist. With a TIME100 Next recognition under her belt, it's clear this is just the beginning of an electrifying career that's breaking boundaries and taking names.

Mendes isn't just a pretty face with a guitar; he's a decorated artist with a trophy cabinet to prove it. He's bagged 13 SOCAN awards, 10 MTV Europe Music Awards, eight Juno Awards, and eight iHeartRadio MMVAs, among others. The cherry on top? Three Grammy nominations and a nod from Time magazine as one of the most influential people in 2018.

Beyond the music, Mendes is a role model, openly discussing mental health and becoming an advocate for the cause. He's dipped his toes into acting with a debut in "The 100" and has even tried his hand at modelling for big brands like Emporio Armani.

Should Straight Actors Take Gay Roles?

The casting tea is piping hot lately, dolls! Should straight peeps play LGBTQ+ roles, or should those prime parts be reserved for the queers? 👀 Some argue acting is about transformation - straight dudes can tackle gay roles if they commit! Others say it swipes opportunities from the LGBTQ+ community. Give those jobs to the gays! It gets shadier... Is it cultural appropriation for straights to profit off queer experiences they haven't lived? Are hetero castings unintentionally perpetuating harmful stereotypes and limiting authentic rep? 😬

But it's not all black and white! Some believe wider audiences can be reached by casting well-known straight actors in gay roles. More eyeballs could equal more empathy! 🌈 Plus, awards for straight actors in queer roles shine a spotlight on LGBTQ+ narratives. However you spin it, there's power in representation. Casting decisions should balance authentic portrayals with artistic freedom. No easy answers, but open convos are fab. Maybe it's time we see more LGBTQ+ actors living their truth onscreen.
