Truth or Cliché? Debunking Gay Stereotypes 

What up, homos! Your resident shady gay Buzzy is back to slay outdated myths about our fabulous community. I know some rosé-swilling aunties claim ruining stereotypes is *so woke* but like, sorry Susan - some of these tired tropes need to sashay away. 

So let’s throw some rainbow confetti at bogus stereotypes, while spilling the T on what’s legit, m'kay? Get ready to gag!

Myth: All gay men are fashionable af. 

Fact check: False! Plenty of lesbians and straight women would snatch trophies from gay men in a fashion face-off. And anyone who’s cruised Grindr lately knows masculine default profiles outnumber couture queens. Let people slay off the runway too, mkay? Verdict: CLICHÉ

Myth: Gay men are all Gaga stans.

Fact check: Partially true! Many of my sisters worship at the Haus of Gaga. But plenty of divas like Mariah, Beyoncé and Diana Ross also have big gay followings. And bros like Troye Sivan are serving fierce artist realness too nowadays. Verdict: STEREOTYPE with some truth.

Myth: All gay men act feminine and flamboyant.

Fact check: Oh honey, no. Tons of gay men rock buzzcuts and jeans 24/7. Maybe it’s internalized nonsense but masc guys exist! Hell, I have one or two femme moments myself but mostly swagger in-between. We contain multitudes, y'all! Verdict: BIG OL' CLICHÉ.

Myth: Gay men are all fit, hairless gym bunnies. 

Fact check: Gurl, I wish! Lots of my homos skip leg day constantly, or sport gorgeous dad bods, hairy chests and happy trails. The perfect "Instagay" look is not realistic for most, nor should it be! Skinny legends, muscle Marys and bears - all beautiful! Verdict: CLICHÉ CLICHÉ CLICHÉ!

Myth: All gay men are catty and bubbly like Queer Eye. 

Fact check: I mean, this stereotype is entertaining! Who doesn't live for sassy Jonathan slaying makeovers? But c'mon, that buff teddy bear Antoni isn't exactly so catty. And IRL, we run the gamut from peppy socialites to chill bros to shy nerds. Verdict: Fun TV cliché, but fake news!

Myth: Gay men obsess over pop divas, musicals and RPDR.

Fact check: Accurate for some! I'll stan Jinkx Monsoon forever, henny. But plenty of gays are also sports nuts, gamers, history buffs and STEM nerds with different tastes. Let's keep our community vibrant by uplifting diverse interests, m'kay? Verdict: PARTIAL TRUTH leaning cliché. 

Myth: All gay men are promiscuous and non-monogamous. 

Fact check: Hoo child, this one’s messy! Monogamy and open relationships both exist in my community. But "promiscuous" stats aren't so simple, especially factoring in social shame and the AIDS crisis. The real T: we just want agency over our bodies and pleasure without judgement, capisce? Verdict: COMPLICATED.
