These verses have been weaponized in debates about homosexuality for way too long, and it's time to tear down some misconceptions with a dose of hard truth. First, let's look at the verses: Leviticus 18:22 :"Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination." Leviticus 20:13 "If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them." Leviticus is like an ancient rulebook for the Israelites, filled with a mishmash of guidelines – some moral, some downright practical. It's as if God was saying, "Stand out, be holy," but let's be honest, a lot of these rules are so archaic they’re laughable today. Take the no-pork rule (Leviticus 11:7). Back in the day, eating pork was like playing Russian roulette with your health. No refrigeration, no USDA standards. But now? We’ve got cooking down to a science. And the rule about not mixing fabrics (Leviticus 19:19)? Please. Our wardrobes would be a disaster if we still followed that. Now, let's tackle the elephant in the room: the verses on homosexuality (Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13). Some folks take these words as gospel, but let’s put it into perspective. It’s likely these were about boosting population numbers in ancient times. Today, overpopulation is more of a concern than underpopulation. So, why cling to these verses with a death grip when we’ve happily tossed out other outdated Levitical laws? Imagine for a second we followed every single Levitical law today. No bacon, no mixed-fabric clothes, no tattoos. It’s a world where touching pigskin is a no-no (goodbye, football), and sitting on a chair a menstruating woman used is taboo. Sounds ridiculous, right? That’s because it is. We’ve evolved past these archaic rules, so why hang onto a select few? It's blatant hypocrisy, plain and simple. We ignore Leviticus on our plates and in our closets, but when it comes to homosexuality, suddenly, it's the holy word? We’re picking and choosing based on what? Comfort level? Personal bias? It’s not tradition we’re preserving; it’s selective morality. And let’s talk about the term “abomination.” Scary word, isn’t it? But did you know Leviticus throws that word around like confetti at a parade? Eating shrimp? Abomination. Wearing a poly-cotton blend? Abomination. In fact, the word "abomination" appears in the Bible over 70 times. Take a look: Deuteronomy Deuteronomy 7:25 "The graven images of their gods shall ye burn with fire: thou shalt not desire the silver or gold that is on them, nor take it unto thee, lest thou be snared therin: for it is an abomination to the LORD thy God." Deuteronomy 7:26 "Neither shalt thou bring an abomination into thine house, lest thou be a cursed thing like it: but thou shalt utterly detest it, and thou shalt utterly abhor it; for it is a cursed thing."
